Green: At What Price?
Environmental development is boosting economies in Africa, but does it come at too high a price? In Uganda reforestation is compromising the livelihoods of some of the world's most vulnerable people.
Teddy Nsamba, director of Norwegian Green Resources, explains that the goal of their company is to ensure reforestation of the land to give Uganda greener economy. However, David Kureeba of Friends of the Earth argues the thousands of people who populate areas such as Lake Victoria are being displaced and impoverished as a result of this: "Green Resources are just destroying these communities". There is a long history of tensions between the government's plans to lease the land to investors and the rural people's right to remain, resulting in violent clashes in areas such as Bukaleba. Elisa Mwesigwa asks following her eviction, "this is our land. They are asking us to vacate, but where would we go?"
