Kratom
In the USA an opioid epidemic is raging. As the world's largest consumer of prescription opioids, addiction and overdoses are common. However, a solution may exist in the form of a plant: Kratom.
Researcher Chris McCurdy is convinced of Kratom's benefits, arguing that there is "potential for [Kratom] to treat opiate addiction and withdrawal". However, the DEA have made plans to schedule the substance, putting it in the same category as heroin. Caught in this dispute are the users. Gina Rivera found a new lease of life by replacing prescription drugs with Kratom, and worries that regulation would "tear my life apart".
