A Southern Quest
The first men to climb South Georgia's daunting peaks
In an intrepid winter exhibition, four explorers set off for the Antarctic island of South Georgia. Their aim: to conquer mountain peaks that have never been climbed before.
“I thought, my God, even if we can get a boat in there, getting up on that glacier is just going to be hell”, recounts legendary climber Stephen Venables. The journey would be defined by appalling weather and dangerous climbs, but the goal in mind was worth every discomfort. “Knowing that you’re the first person ever to be traversing on there was a total thrill”, says David McMeeking.
