The mysterious disappearance of a Portuguese businessman in Mozambique
Since 2011, abductions in Mozambique have occurred frequently, with many investigations going unresolved. Portuguese business entrepreneur Américo Sebastião, who disappeared in 2016, is one such mystery.
Three days before his family were due to reunite with Américo in Mozambique, he was kidnapped by an unknown group and has never since been found. It happened in the province of Sofala where he worked, a region torn by political conflict between the Remano and the Frelimo. "There were a lot of abductions", explains Commander Lourenço. "I'm talking about 5 or 6 abductions… so far most of them have not been found." While many kidnappers demand a ransom, Américo's captors remained silent. Following conflicting testimonies, the case has remained unsolved. Américo's wife Salome has since been trying "to raise awareness within Mozambique that this matter is serious and needs to be resolved".
