Motala's New Leg

The crippled Thai elephant given another chance

Motala's New Leg Motala was a working elephant before her leg was blown off by a landmine - but now Thai citizens are rallying to save her. However, the move is not without controversy.
Many of Thailand's elephants are whipped to haul massive weights like rocks and lumber, which has had animal rights activists up in arms for years. Motala was one of these work animals, until she had the ill fortune to step on a landmine. The lower part of her leg was destroyed, and had to be amputated. Many thought Motala would never survive. But a miracle of medicine has allowed Motala to live on three legs. She underwent surgery for the amputation, and now awaits a prosthetic limb which will let her use all four legs. Though she will probably survive, Motala may never be able to perform her former duties. Many contend that saving Motala did not right the wrong of her being used for hard labour. An inspiring yet controversial story about the delicate relationship between man and beast.
