A Big Piece Of Good News
Two eccentric billionaires' mission to save California's beaches
US billionaires Jack and Laura Dangermond have donated $165 million to preserve stretches of pristine Californian coastline. Making their gift public is an attempt to inspire others to act.
"Time is running out... people are going to have to move to do this kind of thing in small ways and large ways all over the planet", believes Jack. Making billions from their start-up ESRI, now the world leader in geographic information systems, the Dangermonds rallied to save the Californian coastline they love from impending development. "Our philosophy is we need to really drive forward with information and science that can help people understand and then act differently." Thus they turned to the environmental NGO, The Nature Conservancy. For employee Mike, “the lesson Jack and Laura put out here to people is that protecting our world isn’t a spectator sport. Everyone needs to get involved”.
