LGBTQ Migrants LGBTQ asylum seekers are facing unprecedented obstacles at the US border, often spending months in detention. Facilities are ill-equipped to cater for trans detainees, and discrimination is rampant.
Emigration to the US is often a last resort for LGBTQ asylum seekers, while returning home is usually out of the question. "I know that if I’m sent back, they’ll kill me", says trans migrant Victoria Castro. But her ordeal continued when she reached America, handcuffed to a pole away from other detainees for six hours. "We have a [trans] client right now that’s been in solitary confinement for 17 months", says lawyer Lynly Egyes.
