Made in Ethiopia
The exploitative factories making your fast fashion in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is rapidly expanding its clothing manufacturing industry to further economic growth. But what is the reality of our cheap and easy high-street clothing?
Despite claims that local growth is supported by fair wages and reasonable working conditions, employees in Hawassa are being exploited. "The industrial park is good, because it created employment opportunities", says one Hawassa resident. “But the number of hours worked by workers and the salary they receive is not balanced." Another worker agrees that the system is unsustainable. “We have a job, but we are not financially self-sufficient", they say. "When they recruited us, they told us that we wouldn’t have any expenses, that everything would be taken care of", says another worker. "But we have nothing, we can’t even take responsibility for ourselves.”
