In sacred Varanasi devout Hindus abandon life, spending decades awaiting death and cremation in 'death hotels'. This sumptuous film explores their pursuit of 'moksha', an end to the cycle of rebirth.
For residents, death in Varanasi is thought to be the ideal way of achieving enlightenment. "It's been 22 years since I moved here", says one hotel guest on the Ganges. "If we die outside of Varanasi, we won't attain liberation." Along the river-banks, a small industry of cremators and hoteliers offer unique end-of-life care.
