Exploring the present, past, and future of mountain guiding

Becoming a Guide Bianca and Finn are two young mountain enthusiasts, seeking out thrilling careers as mountain guides. The two aspirants embark on a lengthy training program to learn these skills, but qualifying as a mountain guide is no walk in the park – huge physical and emotional demands are placed on the pair, as they gather the skills they need to guide others through the mountains. Meanwhile, Italian guide and alpinist Hanspeter Eisendle, and Chamonix based Scottish guide Neil Brodie, recount the rich history of mountain guiding. Looking to the future, this documentary, also questions what effects climate change will have on all mountain dwellers, let alone those who work in them.

Alexander Hick - Director

Alexander Hick studied fine art at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, documentary film making at the University for Television and Film in Munich, and at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfico in Mexico. He was awarded the Bavarian Debutante Prize and the Bavarian State Award for the Advancement of the Arts. His films and video installations have been shown extensively at international festivals (e.g. Zurich Film Festival, Visions du reel, Morelia Festival de Cine, Film Festival München, Dok Leipzig) and in museums (e.g. Pinakothek der Moderne, Haus der Kunst, Macba Barcelona). For his most recent film, Thinking like a Mountain, he was awarded a German Human Rights Film prize. Alexander Hick has been a state-certified Mountain Guide sine 2018.
