Vlaamsblok

Belgian's anti-immigrant party takes to the streets

Vlaamsblok Waving flags and burning torches they march down the street chanting their slogans: "No shelter in our town!" The right wing populist party Vlaams Blok protests against asylum-seekers waiting to move into a local refugee centre near Antwerp.
"We've just had enough. There are too many foreigners here in Flanders [...] and we Flemish have to foot the bill", says one of the demonstrators. The rhetoric is familiar and unnerving in European history. Vlaams Blok declares solidarity with Jorg Haider's Freedom Party in Austria. They also lobby for Flanders partition from Wallonia, the French speaking part of Belgium. More than just xenophobia, most members harbour a general dislike of all "European immigrants". They want to rid Brussels of Eurocrats and to reclaim it as the Flemish capital. The Belgian government has imposed sanctions preventing Vlaams Blok from forming coalitions with other parties. But will this policy feed or quench the flames of hate?
