Water Shortage
In many areas of France and Switzerland, residents barely have enough water to live on, houses crumble and rivers run dry.
Global warming is increasingly leading to water scarcity - warmer summers and milder winters are leaving regions like the Jura, in France and Switzerland, without the rain they need to refill reserves.
Across multiple regions of France and Switzerland, water is in short supply as water levels in rivers are decreasing. 'We can call it a Mediterraneanization of the climate', explains Mikhaël Schwander, Meteoswiss meteorologist. The impact is severe in the affected regions, and it's only getting worse. 'It's been a good ten years that the village of Lect has had a water shortage in the summer. At first it was August, then July-August, now September too and soon maybe October', explains Dominique Retord, Mayor of Lect. In some areas, the lack of water is leading to sinking ground, affecting buildings and leading to collapses. 'There were 700 houses affected in the year 2019', says Hugues Brier, who represents victims.
