Back to School with Delta
In Florida, schools are battling against a Delta surge and the state's Governor to keep kids safe and in class.
COVID-19 has disrupted the education of millions of students. In Florida, schools are battling against a Delta surge, as they strive to keep kids safe and in class - but some parents disagree with the measures schools are imposing.
During its various peaks and waves across the globe, the Coronavirus pandemic has derailed all areas of life - but it has in particular been a disruptive force in education. In Florida, parents and educators are clashing over how best to handle a current surge in the Delta variant. One of school's only tools is face-masks for children, with mask-wearing recommended by the CDC: 'in my view, masks are important because that's the one mitigation strategy we have. We really don't have a lot of weapons', says Florida principal Mike Gamble. Yet many parents believe that masks should be optional - leading to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis issuing the 'Parents Bill of Rights', which made mask-wearing parents' choice - much to the dismay of teachers. 'We have parents acting like having their child wear a mask is child abuse', says teacher Maggie Paxon. 'When I tried to take my daughter to school, they wanted to force her to wear a mask, but I told them not to do that', says one anti-mask parent. 'Parents have the right to make the medical decisions for their children'.
