Under Bolsonaro’s rule, minority cultures in Brazil were subject to persecution, forcing their self-expression underground. Now, there is hope for the future amongst artists in São Paulo.
‘The moment Bolsonaro came to power was the moment when everyone felt authorised to be racist, authorised to be homophobic’, says Loïc, an artist. For the LGBTQ+ community in São Paulo, creating art with their bodies is an act of resistance against oppression. ‘Brazil is the country that kills the most trans people in the world’, says Laura, ‘so our art is an open wound in the urban fabric’.
