The Defenders of Kharkiv
Residents of Kharkiv live in terror of Russian bombing
Ukraine’s lightning advance on Kharkiv has reclaimed some occupied territory. A strategically important city in northeast Ukraine, Kharkiv has been subjected to ceaseless shelling since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Since the start of Russia's war on Ukraine, the city of Kharkiv has been relentlessly bombarded. 'We cannot let them into the town. I would like to tell the Russian soldiers to go home and not to bother us any more. Either captivity or death awaits you here', says Ukrainian soldier Volodya. The volunteer soldiers defending Kharkiv take the TV crew deep into the territory they are fighting for their lives to protect from the Russians, with bombs raining down on them. For the civilians of Kharkiv, constant shelling has become a way of life. Elderly Mr Leonid, too afraid to flee his apartment, was alone for nearly three weeks amid the bombing. 'I saw a woman walking by. I was standing in the stairwell at the time. A moment later I heard an explosion, I think a piece of shrapnel hit her directly. The woman fell to the ground'.
