Guatemala: Paradise Lost
Russian mines continue to wreak havoc on local environment in Guatemala
The Russian-Swiss mining company Solway has invaded the lands of the Q'eqchi, a local Maya community. Now, the community is fighting back against the pollution that is endangering their natural resources.
In Guatemala, the Q'eqchi people have accused Solway, a Russia-Swiss mining company, of polluting their land. But Q'eqchi protests have been violently repressed. 'The Guatemalan authorities criminalize people fighting for their rights', says fisherman Eduardo Bin. 'Because of the repression in the region, the wealth of [Solway] has increased', notes activist Isabel Solis.
