Atonal Glow

The emergence of a musical prodigy in Georgia

Atonal Glow Tsotne Zedginidze, a 10-year-old classical pianist and composer from Georgia, is sometimes compared to Mozart. He lives with his charismatic grandmother Nina, who acts as caregiver, teacher and international career manager. Subtly balancing the child prodigy's perspective with that of the outside observer, director Alexander Koridze explores the thorny reality of raising a child for whom stardom seems inevitable.

Making The Film

Director's Statement

Tsotne's talent is already highly recognized by such an important figure in the music world as Daniel Barenboim (Daniel Barenboim is also involved in the film). It is most important for the director in this film to show the child’s unique inner world, as naturally and as tactfully as possible. The film has another equally significant character – Tsotne’s grandmother, Mrs. Nino Mamradze (a well-known piano tutor in Georgia). For Tsotne and his sister, she has replaced a mother, who died young. Nino is not only a close relative for Tsotne. She is also his music mentor, without whom the child’s unique talent might have gone unnoticed. With her dramatic presence, the lady is as much a protagonist of the film as Tsotne is. New exciting events await Tsotne in the near future. He will soon break through to the international arena. These developments are likely to influence the film’s narrative and dramatic composition. The film’s structure consists of two narratives – one is the material that Tsotne himself films with his mobile phone. This allows us to look straight into his inner world. The film’s director is not even present during the filming of these scenes. The second is a classical narrative, told through the eye of the documentary camera. What amazes me most is the realization of how uncomplicated and easy-going a prodigy can be in everyday life. Another line that runs through the film is the relationship Tsotne and his sister have with their father. It is a complex relationship, based on the fact that there are internal tensions in the family.
