Boxing in the Blood

The Ghanaian who rose to boxing stardom

Boxing in the Blood The inspiring story of Alfred Tettey who rose from the steetfighting areana of Ghana's subburbs to find success on the world's greatest stage.
E.T.A Abbey is an expert on the Ga tribe, its culture and the Bukuom boxing phenomenon. In this small, poor enclave in Accra, boxing is a way of life and a central part of Ga identity. Here young boys fight in the streets in whatever gloves they can find. Like 95 per cent of Ghana's Olympian boxing squad, 19 year-old Alfred Tetteh first proved himself in Bukuom. He follows in the footsteps of world champions like Azumah Nelson and like many Bukoum boys Tetteh is inspired by the "ghosts" of his forefathers. At 11 he won his first street fight, at 16 all eyes were on him when he won three fights in Atlanta. Now his sights are set on Sydney. This is a moving story about a team fighting the odds of poverty to win gold for Ghana and to add to the legend of Bukuom boxing.
