Young Hunters of Arviat
The program reconnecting Inuit youth with disappearing traditions
A community-led program in the Arctic is teaching Inuit youth to hunt for their families and connect with their vanishing traditions.
The Young Hunters program aims to reconnect Inuit youth with traditional methods of hunting and living in the Arctic. There are high unemployment rates in Arviat, and substance abuse and depression are common. ‘Kids are graduating from high school without any hope of having a job or career here’, says Kukik Baker, the founder of the Young Hunters’ program. ‘We decided we should create a program where we could teach kids these lessons which have skipped a generation’.
