Draining the Seas

The plight of the Patagonian Toothfish

Draining the Seas The Patagonia Toothfish is causing a fierce debate amongst governments and fishermen in the South Western Indian Ocean. This ugly fish is becoming an increasingly rare and valuable resouce.
As world fish stocks show signs of depletion, this film illustrates the difficulties in controlling international fishing. The oily white fish is becoming so valuable that is known as ’White Gold’. It has caused an explosion in fishing. The value of the toothfish lies in its desirability as a delicacy in restaurants throughout the Orient and the United States. At $11 000 per ton, it is four times the price of regular white fish. This explains why people take the risk of fishing for it illegally. South Africa is one of the countries trying to end unlawful fishing in their waters, but finding the vessels is like looking in for a needle in a haystack. Environmental groups are also concerned that over-fishing will place the toothfish at the risk of extinction. “It is critical”, says Greenpeace.
