Brave
The death ritual of a Haitian voodoo priestess
For Cébé, it is a huge responsibility to perform the death ritual of her mother, Clairina, a Voodoo priestess. Cébé must celebrate the deity that Clairina served: Brave. She packs up offerings to take with her from France back to Haiti. There are strong matrilineal ties connecting Clairina, to Cébé, to her daughter Ninie. "Send Brave to deliver me" Cébé implores the spirit of her mother. The death ritual is full of colour, music and energy. But Cébé's return to Haiti also brings feelings of guilt: "If I'd known I wouldn't see you again, I never would have left."
