During the 1948 Nakba, an Israeli military governor commanded the people of the Bir'm village that "whoever remains will be killed". The following years of the occupation saw the widespread oppression and expulsion of Christians. Hanan Ashwari faced arrest upon returning to Palestine. “They decided I had no right to be there. Even though my family goes back centuries”. United with the wider Palestinian community in their resistance against the Israeli occupation, Gaza Christians remain defiant: "we were here. We are here. We will persist.".
