Women working in agriculture provide the backbone of the Tunisian economy, however their labour is severely underpaid, and they are afforded no protection or equipment for the extreme working conditions. This Al Jazeera investigation speaks to the women and girls bearing the brunt of this situation.
In rural Tunisia, a mother toils in the fields to secure life-changing surgery for her daughter. From the ”cold of winter to the scorching heat of summer,” Noura works long hours in Tunisia’s fertile fields to earn a living, enduring harsh conditions. Her strength comes from necessity. Alongside other women, she travels every day to the farm on the back of a truck, waking up at “2am… walking through the wolves and boars to get to the fields.”
