Fire Beneath Her
A young Indonesian Indigenous leader makes bold plans to protect her village from Borneo’s wildfires
The increased frequency of Borneo's wildfires is threatening its precious forests, and the people who live there. In this doc a young Indonesian Indigenous leader makes bold plans to protect her village.
Emmanuela Shinta is raising funds to buy an area of land near her forest village to protect it from wildfires. "In my lifetime, I have seen the forest sold, burned, cleared, and, with it, a whole way of life" says Shinta. The threat of wildfires in Indonesia's central Kalimantan province has increased by more than six times compared to 2022. By buying Indigenous land, Shinta hopes to protect the forest from industrial activites that exacerbate the threat of fires. "Even here, deep in the forest, industry is closing in" says Shinta, and she hopes to make a start to protect it: "it's a small area, but it's a start."
