Murder in Afghanistan

Distinguished service medals stripped as Australia determines 39 Afghans murdered by special forces

Murder in Afghanistan The 2020 Brereton Report found credible information of war crimes in Afghanistan, including the unlawful killing of 39 people by Australian forces. Amid international pressure, Australia reckons with its troubling legacy.
“The forces of 42 countries have come to Afghanistan. Of these 42, not one committed as much injustice as the Australian soldiers did, especially in Uruzgan." According to villager Haji Gul Mohammad of Uruzgan, Afghanistan, Australia must address the consequences of its violent intervention in the country between 2005 and 2016. The pressure on Australia led by international human rights groups to address decades of conflict is confirmed by eye witnesses - "In this village, you can find ten other witnesses. This is not a secret conspiracy." The truth slowly comes to light, as alarming details of Australian brutality are revealed. Mohammad tells the camera, “We were at night prayers when the Australian forces arrived. There were 16 of us, they handcuffed our hands behind our backs…then took us to an old yard”, where the local imam and his son were executed. As Australia steps toward accountability however, questions of injustice linger, especially for figures like Taliban member Hekmatullah, accused of murdering Australians and later allowed to walk free.
