India and Russia's thriving asbestos trade but 70 countries banned it

Asbestos India is the world’s largest importer of asbestos, a substance deemed toxic to humans and with proven links to cancers and death.
"We used to play in the asbestos dust. We used to climb on it". For millions in India, asbestos was once a part of daily life. Today, its deadly legacy has come to light. Dozens of countries have banned asbestos, which kills 255,000 people annually. India continues to use copious amounts in construction and industry, leaving workers with devastating illnesses. "50% will be alive for 10 months, all victims will die within 25 months" warns Dr Murli. "I would categorise the asbestos industry not just as big business, but as criminal big business," says lawyer Krishnendu Mukherje. While industry leaders claim it can be safe if handled “responsibly”, the reality suggests otherwise.
