Viva La Meloni: The Reign of the Far Right
Under Meloni’s hardline vision, Italy holds the worst press freedom of any European country. Meloni, who prefers to communicate via social media, shares a connection with Trump which threatens political liberties in Italy and beyond.
The Meloni administration's attacks on press freedoms pose immense challenges to political and social life in Italy. Emiliano Fittipaldi, Editor of the newspaper Domani claims, “It’s much more dangerous than before to be a journalist in this country.” An ad hoc law which protects politicians under investigation or linked to legal scandal is one such limitation made by Meloni, who has called the writing of various national newspapers, including Domani, “false criticisms from pressure groups”. Laura Boldrini, Chair of the Human Rights Committee, criticises Meloni’s approach: “She does press conferences without journalists, which is ridiculous.” According to Boldrini, “this government is allergic to freedoms... They think that there is a plot against them. But in democratic countries, the press has the duty and above all the right to act as a watchdog of power, right?”
