OnlyFans: Behind the Scenes of Sex and Scams

Fame. Fortune. Fetish. But at what cost?

OnlyFans: Behind the Scenes of Sex and Scams The UK-originating subscription platform Only Fans has seen its user base increase more than tenfold since 2020, now boasting hundreds of millions of users. This RTS report investigates its meteoric rise.
The adult content site Only Fans allows creators to upload self-made pornography which users can subscribe to for 5-50 francs per month. It has recently become one of the largest technology companies in the UK. The platform offers many a boost of income. 37-year-old single mother and educator Zengaciel explains: “Financially, I was struggling to get by, and I said to myself, ‘This will be a little extra”. It allows others an outlet for creating porn outside of the mainstream. For creator Adam Jones, the platform “allows us to send a message that anyone has the right to have a happy and fulfilled sexuality”. However, the platform's liberal approach to pornography also means that various middlemen have emerged to cash in on the profits, as well as many cases of blackmail. Only Fans CEO Kelly Blair denies these risks, promising harsh bans in place for those who exploit others, and seeking to create “an environment where everyone is responsible for their actions”.
