Crack Babies
The babies born to crack addicted mothers
Babies born to crack addicts suffer physical and psychological damage for life.
After birth they go into withdrawal, lying in incubators on morphine for months, deprived of mother love. Nicole has four children from four fathers. The CRACK association offers her $200 to be sterilised or take birth control. CRACK doesn’t care if Nicole spends the money on drugs, just that “no more babies are brought irresponsibly into the world”. The Programme has been attacked as eugenic. But in three years, it’s paid over 3,000 women. Tracy stopped smoking crack when she was six months pregnant with Jerimiah, but says he’s hyper-active. A Harlem centre provides refuge for unwanted drug children. Ramon is blind, almost deaf and will never walk. Like many, his mother is HIV positive. “Once you leave here the love and caring stops. It’s a cold world out there”. A sad report on a shocking social trend.
