A Family Affair
Social legacy of Apartheid leaves families in ruins
In the remote rural village of Dreifontein a tragedy is unfolding. Rape and incest threaten to take over a community already battling severe poverty, violence and AIDS.
The stories are harrowing and deeply disturbing. Twelve-year old Zama was raped by her father while the two of them were alone at home. She later became pregnant with his child. Busi, who is nine, contracted a sexually transmitted disease after a trusted neighbour raped her. Thoko, also nine, is so traumatised after being abused by a man she knew from church, that she is unable to speak about her experience while men are present. Although everyone in the village knows their terrible stories, few have been prepared to confront the offenders. “The people here are like one big family and, as in most families, shameful secrets are kept hidden”. We follow Mtshali, a journalist and long term resident, who has taken up the fight against child abuse and incest. He blames the general breakdown of community on the legacy of Apartheid - with fathers often working far from home and bloody suppression of blacks in the 1980s. A well-made and disturbing film on yet another tragic feature of South African society today.
