The Oil Company's Story
Is big oil responsible for Sudanese strife?
Civilians along the road say they fled their homes for three reasons: "no water, no food and no cattle!" One aid worker with eight years' experience in the region claims, "They're not saying they've been displaced because of the oil, they say they've been displaced because of factional fighting." She points out that if Lundin left Sudan its concession might be given to the Chinese - not renowned for their observance of human rights. Whilst Lundin stresses to the local military leader the importance of peace for oil exploitation, a complex picture of a war, largely over livestock, emerges.
