Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, these men drop everything when Parisians drop someting from above: – A diamond ring flushed down the toilet? – The car keys down the drain?
“We’ve looked for cats, crocodiles... snakes, kittens, jewellery, weapons...”, says Philippe Bursini, fishing up a silver knife. He has devoted the past 22 years to raking the muck in rat-infested claustrophobic sewers beneath the city. The force has a 75 per cent success rate and every day Bursini feels like Indiana Jones. Yet even veterans wouldn’t want to get lost in this 2,500 kilometre network of tunnels. Luckily, there are road signs telling you exactly where you are and what’s above.
