Can South Africa's failing railways be saved?
Once the centre of South Africa's economy and life, the railway network is now almost gone.
Once-thriving towns lie derelict, the last few residents barely scratching a living. These towns were built for the railway - they supplied its workers and its commerce, but now the railway has become so inefficient it is no longer economical. The government is left with a quandary: to sell off the railways, or to try and revitalise it with public funds.
