Kangaroo Plague

Dealing with millions of starving kangaroos

Kangaroo Plague Cattle ranches are facing a kangaroo invasion as severe drought forces the animals onto farming land.
On the Oxley station in New South Wales another emaciated kangaroo is pulled out of the dam. The receding watering holes have become a death trap for animals too weak to pull themselves from the mud. As the drought continues to threaten their livelihood, farmers are calling for a mass kangaroo cull. This would protect their farms and save the kangaroos from agonising deaths from starvation. "It's nuts to leave them suffering," states Prof Mike Archer. He believes that farming kangaroos for meat and skin will help control numbers and leave farmers with another sources of income. However, animal rights groups disagree, claiming that kangaroo farming will only led to their extinction. With kangaroos now contending with bush fires, as well as the drought, their population is bound to drastically fall.
