Rape Club
Japan's attitude towards women is under the spotlight following revelations that students at an elite university ran a 'rape club' dedicated to planning gang rapes.
For girls at out-of-town universities, an invitation to a 'Super Free' party was a dream come true. There they could meet men from Japan's elite Waseda university and get a taste of city life. But after the parties had been going for a few hours, selected victims would be invited to a separate VIP function nearby. Then "members of Super Free would stand in line to rape her," states journalist Ryuichi Daigo. Around a hundred women were raped. For many, the Waseda rape scandal reflects the way women are depicted in Japanese society. One of the country's favourite cartoons is 'Rapeman', a superhero who rapes women who have sinned. The Waseda scandal will only further the debate about the treatment of women in Japan.
