Al-Zarqawi
As news emerges of the death of Abu Masab al-Zarqawi, we bring back an insightful profile of him. It reveals how his experiences in a Jordanian prison led to his radicalism and includes interviews with friends and family.
"He is sensitive, caring, gentle, compassionate, merciful," states brother-in-law Salah Al Hami. "But facing aggression against his people, he gets mad." During his youth, Zarqawi appeared fonder of alcohol than religion. But then he went to fight in Afghanistan and was arrested by Jordan's Secret Police. "In prison he was tortured frequently. That treatment made him very firm in his hatred of the police," explains fellow inmate Yusef Al Rababa. He had a dream in which a sword with the word 'Jihad' written on it descended from heaven. Convinced he was acting under Allah's direct command, he founded his own terrorist organisation and went to Iraq. The murder of American contractor Nick Berg and the bombing of the UN headquarters led to a $25 million bounty being placed his head. But that has only fuelled his reputation as Jordan's most feared Islamic Warrior.
