As far back as 1970's homosexual activists have gone to the streets demanding more rights and risking prison sentences, since their sexual orientation was illegal under Franco's regime. Their demands had some success, as amongst the liberal Catalan population where "pink" tourism today is booming. However, homosexuality at large is still a taboo, not only in Spain, but also in a society as a whole. It is still commonly regarded as a disease and viewed as deviant!
