The Brexit Effect
Following Brexit, divisions between communities are reappearing in Northern Ireland. The vote split along sectarian lines, with 85% of Catholics voting to remain, compared to 40% of Protestants.
Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, believes the reintroduction of a guarded border is inevitable: "there will be economic penalties and there will be physical manifestations of a hard border". The potentially violent outcome of this division has led to suggestions that Northern Ireland should be exempt from Brexit. But DUP spokesman Sammy Wilson believes that "Brexit should not be used an an excuse to weaken the union".
