Immigration Showdown
As Donald Trump cracks down on immigration, different parts of the country are adopting very different stances. We look at how two cities in California are responding to these divisive new policies.
"I left my family behind, my parents, my brothers, in Mexico, so I could come here to work. I've continued to work and never stopped." Gloria, who lives in Fresno country, shares her story with many others. However, she now lives in fear of deportation. New rules mean local law enforcement must work with immigration officials, making illegals afraid to approach the law. In response, lawyers like Aida Macedo have fanned out across the county. "I think the community is just, to put it simply, is afraid to just be outside, to go outside", she tells us. Conversely, in San Francisco, a so-called 'sanctuary-city', police do not involve immigration officials. Dennis Herrera, the City Attorney praises the policy: "it has promoted cooperation between immigrant communities and police and law enforcement".
