Criminalising Women
ABC investigates the re-offending cycle of Australia's female convicts
Most women who find themselves in the Australian prison system have faced some sort of abuse in their past - be it substance, sexual, mental or physical. But with an emphasis placed on punishment rather than rehabilitation, re-offending rates are high, and a majority struggle to integrate into society, often falling back into the destructive habits that landed them in trouble in the first place. ABC Australia follows three women; Bekki, Fran and Donna, as they navigate an institutional system designed not to bring about change in individuals, but to isolate them.
