In Hudson, Universal Basic Income is being trialled by a small group of residents
Last week, President Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Act into law. It is the third relief package for American's since the coronavirus pandemic took hold. The checks, which began rolling out last week, go directly to families that qualify.
The relief is also also driving more interest in the concept of guaranteed income. Even before the pandemic, some cities like Stockton, California were already experimenting with guaranteed income programs and showing signs of success. Now more cities across the country are signing on. NewsHour Weekend's Zachary Green went to one small city in Upstate New York to learn more.
