In The Dragon's Grasp
Concerns over China’s increasing global influence
From Taiwan to Hollywood, Chinese influence is growing in the world. With Europe now in its crosshairs, will EU countries stand up for human rights at the risk of losing valuable investment?
As China continues to invest in Europe, some are raising the alarm that political influence could be next: 'If China is becoming the new dominating power, it's highly probable that it will try to create a world in its image, the same way the Americans have tried', says Nadege Rolland, foreign policy expert. Some are calling on European countries to sanction China over human rights violations: 'Switzerland is doing nothing. Their head is on profit and covered with shame', says politician Lisa Mazzone. Many are urging caution, citing China's deep economic ties with Europe: 'If we choose to shun authoritarian countries, suddenly, we'll no longer have contact with two thirds of the world', says expert Ignazio Cassis.
