The Battle for Jerusalem

Will Jerusalem remain divided forever?

The Battle for Jerusalem With plenty of historical archive, this feature delves behind the headlines. It chronicles the daily battle over the city and brings life to both sides of the argument.
We meet the Schwartz family, Israeli settlers who have moved into the Muslim quarter of East Jerusalem. They belong to Ateret Cohanim, a religious nationalist group who's aim is to make it impossible for any Israeli Government to hand back any part of the city. They have been buying properties and setting up settlements at a feverish pace and are insistent that every part of Jerusalem must remain Israeli. A couple of streets away live the Khalaf family, Palestinians who since 1967 have been fighting the Israelis about their residency rights and access to health services. Eighteen year old Yasser Khalaf has cancer and Israeli authorities have denied him treatment after revoking his residency. Yasser's father Azmi is angry with the Israeli government: "Even if a Jew is 70 or 80 kilometres away he receives his rights. A Jew receives everything". But the Israeli Mayor of Jerusalem denies any discrimination against the Palestinians and claims thousands of them would prefer to remain under Israeli control. With plenty of historical archive, this film explores human tragedy on both sides.
