April 28, 1971. President Nixon receives a call about a charismatic young man criticising his foreign policy. "This fellow Kerry - he's politically ambitious and looking for an issue," warns his advisor. "He came back a hawk and became a dove." Kerry came to his country's attention by passionately opposing the war in Vietnam. It was the start of a brilliant political career. He went sailing with John F Kennedy and dated Jacqui Kennedy's sister. But does this man, blessed with the auspicious initials, have the right qualities to be the next president? His colleagues from Vietnam certainly think so. "A lot of people are upset with the current administration," states one veteran. Kerry's wartime heroics contrast favourably with Bush's 'lost years' of military service. He won the prestigious Purple Heart for saving a colleague's life and was one of the team investigating the Iran Contra scandal. But what do his supporters expect him to achieve if he is appointed president? In the words of his sister, "I would just like to see America liked in the world again."
