Religious Conquests
Missionaries flock to '90's Albania
After ex-communist dictator Enver Hoxha banned religion in Albania, he proudly declared it the world's first atheist state. After the ousting of the Communists from power, many have begun openly practising religion again after decades of secrecy. The unique nature of Albania's relationship to religion has made it a hotbed for missionaries, who since the fall of communism have flocked to the country in the hope of converting Albanian's to their religion. However many Albanians remain sceptical of the mission work; many are fiercely attached to the religion that has been in their families and villages for centuries, and religious leaders are fearful that missionaries may upset the generally peaceful co-existence of Muslims, Catholics and Orthodox believers in the country. ABC Australia follows a group of missionaries in an Albania now free to worship whichever God they choose.
