Kashmir

Indian rule over Kashmir leads to violence

Kashmir Kashmir, India's northernmost state, is suffering intense turmoil. Heavy-handed military presence has riled the locals, who have always valued their independence. In Srinigar, the capital of the region, unrest and violence is ever-present as civilians clash with soldiers.
"We want freedom!" shouts a frenzied crowd of protesters. India imposed direct federal rule on Kashmir in 1990, and sent in thousands of troops to quell a separatist uprising. This atmosphere of fear has predictably caused tension amongst the populace. The military is not afraid to respond to the resultant protests with force, and hospitals are full of the wounded. As the unrest precipitates, soldiers enforce a 24 hour curfew, turning the streets into a ghost town. "I fear that if they lift the curfew, there'll be a lot of violence", says one local journalist. India remains resolute in its efforts to crush the uprising.
