Swat Valley

Inside Pakistan's Turbulent Civil War

Swat Valley The North-west Frontier Province of Pakistan has always been a turbulent place. Now it is ravaged by the throes of a civil war between the Pakistani government and local radical Islamic militants.
The army bombards the region with mortars and missiles from attack helicopters, whilst the paramilitaries strike back, capturing soldiers: sometimes releasing them, often beheading them.

It is the local people caught in a vice between the Pakistani army and the guerrillas who suffer and most are now fleeing the region. We travel around war-torn villages and interview refugees forced out of their homeland.

Local fighters are filmed preparing for battle, chanting 'God is the greatest! We'll fight until America is destroyed!'.
