Putin opponents mount protests across Russia ahead of vote
Poisoned five months ago, opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been arrested in Moscow after returning from Germany. Across the globe, calls for his release are growing. In 2017, Navalny was barred from running for president – since then, attempts to silence him have continued.
'If I am not allowed to run, then this procedure cannot be called elections. We will call for a widespread boycott' - Russia's opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, in 2017. In the same year, in the week of Putin's birthday, Navalny was detained: 'So that’s the birthday gift from Mr Putin, I’m pretty sure', joked one his campaigners. Since then, Navalny has survived an attempt on his life - but he has once again been detained.
