The Endless Battle for Abortion in Texas

US courts continue to censor women's right to choose to have an abortion.

The Endless Battle for Abortion in Texas In Texas, a battle rages over abortion, as the Supreme Court is examining the Texas law which prohibits abortion after 6 weeks, even in cases of rape or incest.
Under Texas' new law, women cannot terminate pregnancies after 6 weeks. 'We had a woman come in, she was 6 weeks and three days, there was a heartbeat, there was nothing we could do. She looked us straight in the eye and said: even if it's rape? But that's what the law says. It's very sad', says Dr Bernard Rosenfeld, a Texan gynaecologist. Even women seeking legal abortions are harassed by protestors outside clinics. Escorts like Derenda Hancock help to shield them from demonstrators. She's passionate about ensuring women have access to safe abortion procedures. 'Pregnant women who want an abortion will have an abortion. If it's not safe and legal, they'll try something else. Like drinking bleach. Or turpentine', explains Hancock. It is largely Christian Americans who are behind the pro-life movement. 'We would like America to be a country without abortion. To me, this country was founded on Christian principles', says pastor Ivy Sheldon. Other states, such as Mississipi, may soon follow Texas' lead - as the Supreme Court currently debates overturning Roe V. Wade, the historic ruling which legalized abortion across the United States.
