African filmmakers started being noticed at film festivals in the 1980s. Since then filmmaking in the continent has been the rise. The Ouagadougou Film Festival in Burkina Faso, which started in the 1970s, is more popular than ever, with South Africa sending a congregation for the first time; four to five film are produced in Burkina Faso a year, despite its status as one of the poorest countries in Africa; a national archive has been set up in the capital. Yet there is much to overcome, not least the influence that French money has on the continent's filmmaking.
